Final Fantasy X was the first in the series to be released to the PS2. When it was released, it was regarded as one of the best in the series by critics and fans alike. It is now been called the greatest game of PS2's history, and in 2006 it was named the 11th best game of the 21st century. Famitsu gave the game a near perfect 39/40 score. This was the highest mark for a Final fantasy title in the magazine, until XII broke it with the first 40/40. It was indeed something new for the series, and in every way far more superior. It is now holding the second place spot for highest selling Final Fantasy title (behind VII), and was the first title on the PS2 to hit the 2 million and 4 million sales marks.
The newest feature to X was the voice overs. This was done in a scene in Xenogears some years earlier, but it was the first title in the series with it. The voicing was well done. Though it was not always parallel with the mouthing of the character, this was pushed off as the English speaking being placed over the Japanese wording animation. It is actually hardly recognizable when you are playing the game itself.
The story is perhaps one of the best in the series, if not the best. There is plot twists and turns a plenty, making you want to see what is going to happen next. This goes completely through to the end of the game. The drama is not as high as in previous titles, but it is well balanced with the suspense and light points of humor in the storyline. The characters grow and develop seamlessly, and their interaction with each other is felt by the player.
Graphically, X is far superior to the previous titles in the series. With the aid of a better engine found in the PS2, the programmers could pack the backgrounds, characters, enemies, and every other aspect of the game full of detail and color. There was a giant step forward in the introduction of fully 3D backgrounds, as well as facial expressions of the characters. This allowed for the voicing of the characters to be matched to the game counterparts.
The ATB system used in previous tittles was changed a bit to the CTB system. This allowed for characters to enter and leave the party formation in the middle of battles, rather than waiting until the end of the fight to change characters out. This was one of the best features in the game, since the player could never really tell what enemy they were going to encounter, thus what character they would need until the fight was already underway. To make full use of the CTB, the programmers made it so that only the characters who successfully performed a action in the fight got EXP at the end of the battle.
final fantasy x screenshotThere was also the induction of the Sphere Grid, that allowed characters to gain stats, and learn abilities. After a character reached the end of their portion of the grid, they were allowed to jump into other grids. This could also be accomplished with the right sphere nodes, even earlier. This gave you full control over how the characters would develop in the game.
The music was breathtaking for the title. From the simple opening theme, to the fabulous ballad ""Suteki Da Ne" seen in the game, everything fit into the game perfectly. This is also the first time Final fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu had any type of assistance in writing the score. His collaborators for the X project were Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano.
There were a few minor complaints from the fans of the series. The biggest was probably the inability to explore the world at will. Final Fantasy X was the first title which you followed a set path from point A to point B. This kept the story as the strong point in the game. Things like side quests and mini games were held back until very close to the end of the game. There was no random wandering of the world, nor any major distractions from the plot.
Final Fantasy X was and is still an amazing game, and considered to be the best from the PS2 generation. When Famitsu published its list of 100 greatest games ever, Final fantasy X landed the top spot. (VII was in the second spot) It certainly is one of the greatest RPG's out there, even today.

This is the opening sequence for Final fantasy X. Though there is only two lines in the entire scene, it truly shows the splendor of emotions without the dialog. This is seen throughout the entire game.
