Espers

Centuries ago, 3 gods were banished to this planet. In no time, they began fighting. Those humans that got in the way, were turned into Espers. Espers, at first, were welcome among humans. But 1,000 years ago, the great war of the magi occurred. After this disastrous war, Espers sealed themselves way, in a hidden realm. There they lived quietly in peace, until the Emperor made his way there.

Espers are Final Fantasy VI's version of summons. There are more summons in Final fantasy VI, than any other title to date. In the GBA version, you can gather 31 Espers scattered throughout the game.
While the Esper is equipped, you can then begin to learn the spells they teach. After each battle, you will get AP. This AP is put towards learning the spell. For example, if you have Bahamut equipped, and you gain 10 AP, you will actually get 20 AP. This is due to the spell having a learn rate of x2. Also most Espers grant certain bonuses when you level up. Crusader, for example will increase your MP by 30%, every time you level up with it equipped.
